It always seemed a bit small and toy-like to me but after using it for a while I got used to it and for high-speed spinning would fine, for cranking down on a big fish you can’t beat the big winch style handles from Daiwa but horses for courses. I think I’ve got to it in time and a strip down, degrease and rebuild should have it going ok again. The grease had turned milky and gone a bit lumpy and hence the reel was feeling this way, as I mentioned I’m pretty rough with the hose after a session and I think water has worked a way in past the seal on the main shaft. The reel itself is still ok, it developed a slight grinding noise under the rotor early on that I still can’t seem to pin down but the bail roller stayed smooth and the internal gear mesh stayed smooth until recently and that brings me to the negative, stripping off the side plate and checking the internals revealed that water had made its way inside. The key to this drag is the rubber seal around the drag knob, not a drop has passed this seal in two years and I hose my gear pretty vigorously after each outing, top marks for drag. The drag was super smooth and continued to stay that way, in two years I’ve caught well over 30 good snappers on this reel and the drag is still silky.

I put this combo straight on the front line and was instantly impressed. The reel looked cool, was super light, tight, with limited flex through the body, smooth gear mesh and instant anti-reverse, the only thing I wasn’t keen on was the handle, it just felt, to me anyway, small and too close to the rotor head.

I won this rod and reel combo in a competition just on two years ago, it got delivered with Abu Veritas rod and 20pd fireline crystal.
